molasses wash for rum was created by kezzbar_brewery
This recipe is for a 50lt wash

7kg of unsulphered molasses
5kg of raw sugar
100grams of tomato paste (used as yeast neutrient)

Top up with water to 50lt mark
90grams of bakers yeast
Or rehydrate a tablespoon of edv46 molasses yeast in som 28* water and pitch

Keep ferment around 25*
Its hard to take sg and fg readings with molasses because of the amount of unfermentable sugars in the wash but a rough guide is try for 1,100 to 1.200 start grav and down to 0.990 final grav

Run through a pot still and age on oak

These are great, I'm new to distilling, I want to get one very soon. N00B question, does this stop the need for the flavourings or just help it?

If you use a pot still there is no need for flavouring but if you use a store bought reflux still you cant use molasses wash you will need to use the tpw wash and use flavouring

Sweet mate, they from punkin?
We just tried a good sort from a wine barrel I'd brought down (American Oak) but held SA red, not whiskey. Charred it on the rotisserie (whywouldn'tya haha) and it's come out pretty shmickey mouse. Bourbon even has a faint burgundy colour to it, but no red taste. If you want to give it a crack mate, I'll shoot up a bit of oak to you when I send the stout.

Yea mate from punkin, when i use 1p/l i leave them in for about 6 to 8 weeks and when it gets to a colour i like i drop it down to 2 or 3 dominoes until the flavour i want is there, up to about 3 months then bottle,
This is for aging in 5l demis more volume more time
