Smelly 20L cubes. was created by Deejay
Hi Gash
I have done a few no chills now but cant seem to get rid of the strong malty hoppy smell inside the cube.
I have cleaned/soaked with PBW and other cleaners but cant seem to lose the smell.
Was wondering if this will affect the next brew going in as the last 2 cubes I did from the same batch had a slightly strange taste and smell that I couldn't put my finger on.
They are proper food safe cubes etc.
cheers.

I think i know the smell you mean, although it didn't effect further brews. Its not a bad idea to fill your container with cold water and add 2 cups of bleach and let it sit for a day. Empty and rinse. That should get rid of that lingering smell of malt. Ive never had a problem with that smell contaminating further brews as I've said, but give it a go and see how that goes. It may help . cheers mate.

another thing you could do is make up a mix of white Vinegar and water

White vinegar is a great cleaner and not only just good for this but can be used with alot of other cleaning surfaces

i would fill your cube with the vinegar and water mix and possibly some bi carb soda

leave for 24-48 hours

then give a good rinse out

failing this maybe a non scented bleech as finaroo suggested

i would give the vinegar and bi carb ago first as it is not as toxic as bleech

I use bleach some times, but I fill it with water and just use a splash of bleach, leave it overnight. Rinse well. cheers!

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
