Filtering was created by butto_son
Hi everyone,

Just wondering what is everyone's take on filtering.

What types of beer are suited best to filtering? Obviously you wouldn't filter a hefe weizen unless you were after a 'kristal weizen'. Is filtering really cheating the aging / lager process? Is one better to wait, or is the difference minimal?

Do micro breweries use filtering to keep up with the demand of public 'thirst'?

I like the idea of filtering, making a cleaner beer, and I'm not a huge fan of the flavour yeast can add to beer..
Lots of craft breweries do filter, some don't.
Yeast can mute hop and malt flavours, so it can be a good idea..Great for lagers too.
The issue I have with filtering and why I dont do it often is its a lot of work and cleaning and I'm always paranoid I haven't cleaned the filter properly.

Yeah I agree with some of the yeast flavours blocking the malt notes.

What types of beers would you use it for and what types would you not?

I have a West Coast IPA on atm, and am wondering to age it for xmas or filter it and drink it.

I'd use it for all pale ales, lagers, IPAs, except of course the ones meant to be cloudy. I probably wouldn't bother with big stouts.

West Coast IPA personally I'd filter it and drink it, there isn't really any benefit aging IPAs unless it was designed to be aged from the start. Just be careful of course any oxidation will quickly degrade the hop profile so make sure the filter and lines have been thoroughly flushed with CO2 prior to running the beer through. Cheers!

Cheers!

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
