Small batch beer / Fermenter size was created by Walruss
hi guys, has anyone fermented a small 10L batch in a 30L fermenter ?
I did about a month ago and it fermented perfectly but there was virtually no action in the air lock.
If I had fermented in my SS fermenter, I would have had no idea what was happening.
I'm picking up a 15L fermenter tomorrow at Grain & Grape, am I wasting money buying a smaller fermenter.
cheers

One of those things, Some people will say its fine, others won't. I think you are better off in a smaller fermenter for 10L batches though. 20L is a lot of headspace to fill with CO2. If you were going to leave it there for any length of time I think it wouldnt be very good with the possibility of a lot of oxygen left in there, if you moved it on quickly after ferment probably wouldnt be an issue. I think the smaller is the best bet, plus wont take up as much space etc if or when you have a fermentation chamber/fridge. Cheers!

Thanks for your reply. That was the point I was trying to make to my local Home Brew guy (who has never done a small batch brew) but he wouldn't have it, it sort of makes sense to me for the very reasons you have given.
Thanks again
Keith

Brewing a familiar Dark Mild later today. (hint: Was the bastard tired? Or was he run over by a tire (tyre). No one really knows). One thing for sure. It will be a treat when done. Cheers!
